Smugness

I like music.

I am a fan.

I've not really got my finger on the pulse any more, I have to say. Internet radio has its limits as an EWS for the latest big thing.

But last night I made a pleasant discovery. I've been mucking about with a few tracks with a view to making a mix for some of Krissa's and my friends, and yesterday afternoon I settled on a track listing and order that I was happy with.

Last night, one of the tracks from that compilation was featured in the new iPod Shuffle commercial. You know? The new iPod-like device whose prime features are that it is as big as a pack of chewing gum and it has a random function?
Well. The track is 'Jerk It Out' by The Caesars.

And I felt well smug and chuffed when that commercial came on, and had that minor panic that everyone gets when something they've liked seemingly in isolation for some time enters the public domain - the childish need to stand up and shout,

"I liked that before you! I did! I did!"

Which is what I have just done.
Ah, blogging.

Yeah but the next emotion will be indignation when everyone starts liking it, and you realise it's sacredness was stolen from you.

watch, soon you're gonna start to hate that song just because EVERYONE around you is playing it only because it's the 'cool' thing to do, not because it's a good song or anything, heavens forbid that be the reason. and then you'll be hearing it everywhere, because what with all the demand for the song the inevitable will happen and radio will start to play it. and that coupled with apple's television ad's that are shown with the greater frequency than penile disfunction medicines during a football game.

and do you know what you have on your hands next?

the second coming of 'da da da' that insanely annoying song from the car commercial (volkswagen? mitsubishi?)!

I recon I liked it long before you did though.

I used to be like that with Peter Kay, I've gone off him now eveyrone likes him.

ahhh to be an indiekid.

Can I just say "me too"! I wonder if Apple secretly takes a note of what all its "fans" are listening to in iTunes and then makes the most popular (and yet still obscure) into its soundtrack to enhance its coolness. It's a cult, I tell thee!

paulyg - precisely! It's top of my audioscrobbler list, anyhoo.

ak - It was volkswagen. The commercial didn't make it to the UK but for some reason Krissa and I were talking superbowl commercials and we looked that ad up the other day.

I put my hands up and say I heard it first in a video game, but...hey.

In the department store where I work during breaks from school, there are music videos that play in the teen clothing section. Whoever compiles them has pretty good taste-- that song's music video was on a while ago.

Unfortunately, whenever that ad comes on tv, I think of that job-- and it isn't pleasant. Good song, though.

Oh that childish need to stand up and shout that you got there first. Damn I know that feeling. It usually goes away with a nice cup of tea though.

i saw the add and thought of you. good song.
