Or put the question another way "How many people have dated Adrian's ex's". The number will be equal to or greater than at least. :-)
I had understood Stuart's question (and the answer is me! me! - I think) but now, after reading Adrian's comment, I'm all confused...
Hahahaha.
It's just that I was surprised at there only being two comments yesterday, and both from people I expect are familiar with the slang.
It's a mood, a tantrum, a sulk...as Adrian obscurely pointed out.
something you hit people with?
Anne, my exes were all professionals of the highest level at throwing a strop. (No disrespect to either of them, but if anyone could have a good strop, they could)
I believe "strop" comes from "obstreperous".
HTH.
Isnt that what you use to sharpen a straight razor? or wack your kids with?
Oh yeah!
So I suppose 'having a strop' might sound a bit...odd.
Fair enough.
It's a length of wire rope used to hang scenery in the theatre. Actors are also prone to strops, and should be hung from lengths of wire rope, where possible.
I was thinking the shaving thing. Like to sharpen your straight razor?
Inane & Liz -- yes that's a strop too, and i've definitely read that kids were hit with them too - a stiff piece of leather.
Well, one learns something new every day.
Am more familiar with the form, "stroppy." As in "Don't you get stroppy now, young lady!"
Ah, childhood memories.
Like Dani, I heard the expression "Don't you get stroppy with me, young lady!" a LOT growing up.
A strop is an over-dramatic tantrum. The Australian equivalent, as I have learned in the last few years, is the always cathartic "shit crack".
A strop is like a tantrum, fondly used by the under-5s in all situations.
Okay okay okay.
Like I said before, I was curious if a slang word at the end of the previous post put off would-be commenters.
Thanks, all.
Me!
Ohh too late.. Sorry..
