If Ford Prefect assumed that name when starting his research on Earth for The Guide because he thought it was a name which would help him blend in to Earthly society, why the hell does everyone else, off Earth, call him that? Zaphod in particular, who knew him from childhood.

They don't really call him Ford Prefect. What happens is that the ear translation thingy (babel fish?) translates whatever they really call him into 'Ford Perfect' so that we can understand.

not really an on-topic comment but something I meant to ask you aaages ago and forgot.
The canteen lady at my work (although apparently its a resturant, not a canteen and if she catches you calling it a canteen you don't get fed) is from the Isle of Wight! In fact, her brother is living in Ventnor and has been for the last 40 years!!
She told me ages ago and I was going to ask you if you knew him, but it only just came up again in conversation. Apparently he might have taught you at some point as he is a teacher in the school in Newport. His name is Roger Evans. ring any bells?
perhaps you might know his wife Jill Evans? or his children, Jo and Jim Evans? all still in Ventnor.
aaanyway.. bit random, but I know how small Ventnor is and knew you'd appreciate knowing about me finding someone else from there!!
