Never ask, 'Is everything all right, ah, um, officer?' of a policeman wearing a helmet, ski mask and flak jacket and carrying a long-barrelled machine gun.

He will look at you weirdly.

This is because he gave thought to whether everything was all right before he got dressed.

Details! What happened, were you fancying yourself as John McClane?

Apart from the fact that I always fancy myself as John McClane, no.

I work in the same building as a newspaper who republished the now infamous cartoons featuring Mohammed, and I think there's an armed guard downstairs as a precaution against any possible violence.

what's with the ski mask,though? was it very chilly or do you suspect the copper was wicked ugly?

I think it's standard Winter NYPD gear - not strictly a ski mask, but a sort of covering for the mouth and nose.

really? i thought they weren't printed in the us.

They printed them all right.

The guard on my building has been downgraded from four NYPD soldiers to three less scarily attired cops.

Three cops you can see that is.

You're not meant to see the snipers ...
